Is my Betta good to go?
By Dave | March 21, 2008
steve asked:
It is living in a betta tech bowl, a bit of a small bowl, there is no heater or filter though, but it has rocks and appears happy with its situation and betta bites and I an going to clean it out every week, but I don’t know if I should clean it with soap or just dump the water out and put new water back in. I ask because I read on the net that they like huge tanks with gourmet foods or they won’t last long.
I have water dechlorinator, but I prefer to use spring water instead

I had a beta in a small bowl.. about 8 inches in diameter for a year and it was fine. It really wasn’t very active at all, so I got bored and gave it to one of my friends. There’s some kind of drops that you can buy to put into the water that take the impurities out and help protect the natural oils in their skin, too.

Absolutely do not use soap of any kind. Simply replace 80% of the tank water with water of the same temperature.
Ideally you should have at least a 5 gallon tank for your betta, and a filter and heater.

Your Betta is pretty much set. A small bowl will be ok but they do like more room. If you want a healthy betta fish you might wanna spring 9 bucks at most pet stores to get him a 10 gallon tank. Im serious you can get one for like 8.99 at pet supermarket, or petsmart. It doesn’t have a hood or filter but you can pay another 10 for a filter and be set. Just make sure the water isn’t filled ALL THE WAY up. He’ll jump and die if you do.
Im sure your betta would apreciate it. Or you could pay 10 dollars for a 2.5 gallon bowl.
A plant would add much interest to the tank and your betta would be a lot happier. If you get a 2.5 or 10 gallon you could even get him a mystery snail friend. Their so cute.
The bowl will be fine for now, in the long run though a small tank/2.5 gallon bowl would do best.
Dont wash the bowl with soap. Just dump the water and fill it back up. You should invest in some water conditioner to take the chlorine out of the water. it would take about 3 dollars.
The pellets are fine.
good luck!

Dont use soap, it will totally kill your fish and poision them to death. Just rinse everything.

NO SOAP!!!! just rinse with hands and replace water, let water sit for a few days to get chlorine out. use a water softner like Betta Plus Bowl Conditioner
